Hungry

I've been ill for a little while: a stomach bug, then sinusitus, then some undiagnosed problem in my digestive system that wrenched terribly when I ate anything. So, I went without eating for a while.

It has been so strange to be really hungry and not being able to eat...
(taken on mission trip in Costa Rica)

...but, I knew it was temporary.
For many of us, food is in incredible abundance. While pangs bellowed in my stomach, I couldn't escape the sights and smells of food...tv commercials, restaurants on every corner, the smell of fresh-baked cookies in the store, and even snacks at bible study. Foodwise, we hunger for nothing and we satisy our desires whenever and wherever we want.

Rather than immense thankfulness, we make ourselves busy and worrysome over what to eat.
Where to go for lunch? Oh, not there, because I just had that yesterday...
What an incredible luxury to not eat the same thing two, three, four, five... days in a row.

What to fix for dinner? There's simply nothing in the house.
To another, there is a pantry and refrigerator full of food.

It lasted nearly two weeks and have just been able to eat some solids again. But you know, life was simpler. I didn't worry about what to eat. God provided for my needs, giving me strength enough to care for my little boy. And give me a little perspective...

"So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:31-33

Well said. It is actually a little sickening to think of our arrogance when it comes to God's provision -- food, clothing, housing, transportation. I wonder how I would respond if I were provided primarly manna for 40 years? Going out and picking what you need for that day only & trusting God to provide the next. I'm afraid I would be horrified at my own response.
